Rescheduled Fun Run - 25th October 2019

Due to weather conditions, this event has been rescheduled to Friday 25th October 2019. We look forward to seeing you there!

Update: The Sports Council will be selling fruit cones on Friday to continue our Health & Well-being week.

There will also be raffle tickets for sale to win some wonderful sporting prizes such as a signed Cardiff City football. These will be on sale throughout the day on Friday and during the Fun Run!

We look forward to seeing you all there.

What is ELSA?
ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant – so it is actually the title for the person who can help you with emotional literacy.

BUT I don’t know what Emotional Literacy is?
There will always be children facing life challenges that might interfere with learning. Some will require greater support to emotional literacy than others. ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by educational psychologists. It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.
What things are linked to Emotional Literacy?
In ELSA we aim to provide support for a wide range of emotional needs such as:

  •    Recognising emotions
  •    Self-esteem
  •    Social skills
  •    Friendship skills
  •    Anger management
  •    Loss and bereavement
Why is it important that we have ELSA at Penygawsi?
Well, school is where we come to learn. It is a place where we should feel safe and that we are able to learn things and work with others. However, there are things that can happen in our lives that might prevent us from learning properly.
Who are our ELSA’s at Penygawsi?
We are lucky enough to have two qualified Emotional Literacy Support Assistants at Penygawsi – Mrs Hawkes and Mrs Vowles. They have been trained to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils who are experiencing temporary or longer term additional emotional needs. The majority of ELSA work is delivered on an individual basis (working with an ELSA on your own), but sometimes small group work is more appropriate, especially in the areas of social and friendship skills, we call theseCommunication Groups.  It may even be that somebody want a quick chat about something that is on their mind. As such we have developed a "I need a chat" box which all children will be able to access to drop a note if they need to during the week.

We hope you will recognise this and support our upcoming “Fun Run” in support of the development of the new room as it may be a space that your child or their friends may need to use during their time at Penygawsi.
